Revised Date for migration of service tax assesses to GST

GSTN has extended the starting date of enrolment of service tax assessees not registered under state VAT under GST from 9th Jan to 14th Jan, 2017. Barring a few states, dealer enrolment rate has been less than 50% in most of the states, shows data collected by GSTN. The enrolled migration of excise assessee who are not registered under State VAT is coming out to be 43.24%. To encourage more migration of states taxpayers, date for service tax assessee is intentionally postponed. Moreover, for the new registered taxable persons taking registration in VAT/ Service Tax/ Central Excise after January 2016, the date of migration into GST will start from 1st Feb, 2017.

Many taxable person questioning legal validity of GST registration, CBEC is putting section 166 of draft CGST act with rule 14 of draft registration rules (issued in sept, 16) with an urge to taxpayers to support for smooth implementation of GST by 1st April, 2017. As per CBEC guidelines to department officers, process of migration to GST should be finished by end of January, 2017.
